In The Zone

There is nothing like being in the zone, whether its for work, tidying or whatever!

That feeling when you're so focused that you're flying, no matter what you're doing, you can't be stopped, won't be interrupted and won't stop until you're either finished or exhausted! Today I'm deep in the zone (although sadly its mainly for tidying and being organised rather than actually working...maybe that'll come later, I hope)

I just wish it happened more often workwise...

some people call that hypomanic...

same here. I get into that mood and it feels like I can do anything, but the weeks leading up to an exam I could not care less for studying. SIGH

Could be argued one of the things people are learning on the way through med school (though not in a "taught" way) is to develop ways to get past what you are describing.

Otherwise... what happens when you turn up for the clinic feeling "I really just can't be arsed today"?

If what happens is that the patients get a grotty standard of care compared to days when you are feeling "in the zone", that is hardly fair to the patients. Your problem shouldn't be their problem.

Just another of those ways in which medicine is not as other jobs. If I sit at my desk writing a research paper, but am having one of my less efficient days, no harm no foul and so on.

Not the same with patient care, at least not if you are going to do medicine properly. I wouldn't say all doctors do, but it presumably must be the ideal they should aspire to.

Sorry, that all sounds frightfully pompous, but there is a point there.

OMG he's talking about dancing and jigging as you're working in hyperdrive (as we do in a pair when we 'get in the zone' on the house to tidy it). Not about being negligent.

Flippin' heck.

Hmmm, well from a patient’s point of view I do expect good care from my doctor but I am not unrealistic and understand that s/he is human too and that nobody can always be on absolutely ‘top form’ . I think the littlemedic has enough savvy to know that you can still be efficient and professional even if you are not feeling ‘in the zone’. Suggest blog was actually supposed to be a little light-hearted ... One thing absolutley guaranteed to make a patient worse, is a dose of pomposity ...
