Thank You

I just wanted to say a quick thank you to those who've read and commented on my blog. Particularly on my last post, and other equally challenging posts. It is reassuring and refreshing to read comments sympathising with me, and equally as interesting to read comments which challenge my thoughts.

My last post seemed to generate a recurring theme that the same kind of things happen elsewhere. Which is reassuring I suppose, although perhaps I'll never be free from this kind of thing? Another message was that people are human and make mistakes, this is true, and I would never blame individuals. It is the institution as a whole which I blame, I've been saying since the end of my first year here that I no longer had any faith in my university. I've been lied to, ignored, and threatened by my medical school in the last 3-4 years, not once have I been offered help, or an apology. I wish I didn't have to rely on them for my degree, and it makes me rather sad to think like that.

I'm fairly sure that people from my medical school read my blog, perhaps some of the university staff do. They probably don't like it and right now I sit here considering getting rid of my blog altogether. Many of us bloggers seem to be rather paranoid about being disciplined because of our rants, perhaps I should be paranoid more than others due to the critical nature of some of my posts.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to my 10,000+ visitors (9990 of which is probably me.) I hope you enjoy reading, and I hope you continue to enjoy it until the time comes when my paranoia gets the better of me and I hit that big red delete button!

Aww chin up mate. I got here a bit late, but after reading your last post I can tell that you care a lot about being a good doctor and you'll make a good one, too. I know the impulse to delete the blog can be strong sometimes *coughPhoenixcough* and you prolly get a lot more hassle from your med school than I do from mine, but stick with it. Even if only because, like I told you a long time ago, it's highly therapeutic :)

Congrats on the Britmeds mention, BTW! You've been on there a lot this year haven'tcha?

Hey, Just came by your blog while surfing. Not to say, you have been experiencing a lot haven't you? Well, unfortunately pals at my place feel the same but its maybe because of severe ragging and all. Anyways after reading through your stuff, I have little doubt left that you would be a good doctor one day(saw the countdown too)

Chin up mate- at least you don't have your med school in your name!! My blog has been deleted once and will probably get dumped again at some point.

Yes your med school appears to be crap- but they all are. They know how competitive it is to get in- so once your in they can treat you like shit becuase you need to be there. It sucks but that's life.

Now go have a big glass of red and don't worry!

That delete button looks tempting sometimes, doesn't it?

Things will get better. Sometimes life's a bitch and we (the good guys) just have to let it go and take the moral high ground.

Anyhow, I have a suspicion that you'll be fine :)

As a wanna be doctor (currently suffering my way through a law PhD - fancy swapping?) I LOVE your blog. I wish I was brave enough to jack the law in and go study for grad medicine. From your last couple of blogs it sounds as if all universities are the same: run by a bunch of tossers who couldn't survive in the real world. In the course of my undergrad degree and two unis for the PhD, the vast majority of lecturers I have come across are self-centred, full of their own (negligible) importance and think nothing of walking all over you for the sake of their own careers. Get your degree, I hope you'll make a great doctor, and remember when you have your own medical students all that you went through. Oh and screw the system any way you can.

Although I'm a lowly biomedical sciences student, I had a similar situation a few weeks ago. I got 55% on a practical report that I felt I had worked my pants off on. I felt like surely something must be wrong and I scheduled an appointment with my lecturer. After sitting through a 30 minute talk, the lecturer was big enough to admit they had made mistakes when marking my report, and changed my mark to 70%.

I came so close to just letting it go but I had a gut instinct that something wasn't right and I followed it up. What I'm trying to say is that if you feel you've got a raw deal from one of your markers then chase someone up about it and find out why you got the mark you did.

Good luck.

Our med school good guy - the year 1 co-ordinator, who actually cares, told us that the elective is the only way they could ever get Med students to survive the course without a breakdown - it is designed to restore your faith in Medicine, which is why they encourage us to leave the NHS and go to a country where healthcare is literally life or death.

Chin up, chill out and chant under your breath the one thing that keeps me going at my part time job - "Grant me the courage to change what I can, the serenity to accept what I cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference". Sometime you just gotta roll with it.

Cheers
